Sleep paralysis is a common occurrence, and if you are experiencing it, you are not alone.
This is a temporary state when you feel you cannot move or speak when transitioning from your sleep to wakefulness.
This is a distressing experience that I have also gone through. After lots of consultations with the elders, I was told I was under a demonic attack. Damn!
Since then, I have been doing some research, including a biblical one.
What I learned is there is no direct mention of sleep paralysis in the bible. But, there are stories to encourage us to seek God’s assistance and wisdom to overcome this challenge. I will share all this with you in this piece.
Sleep Paralysis Spiritual Meaning
Spiritually, the bible acknowledges the existence of spiritual beings and the encounter with demons, angels, and supernatural entities.
This explains why people with sleep paralysis may associate it with spiritual forces.
Though some traditions associate this occurrence with being under spiritual or demonic attack, this can be a manifestation of spiritual warfare.
That is why you feel oppressed and attacked by spiritual forces.
Another meaning maybe you need to seek God’s protection and deliverance.
In most biblical stories, people who faced physical, spiritual, and emotional challenges turned to God for deliverance, protection, and guidance.
Just like Psalm 91:5-7 says, when you pray for protection and seek God’s presence, you will find solace.
“You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the plague that destroys at midday. A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you.”
Psalm 91:5-7 (NIV)
But also, take a look at the spiritual meaning of hearing knocking in your sleep.
What Does The Bible Say About Sleep Paralysis? It Is Demonic?
Biblically, there is no direct mention of sleep paralysis as a medical problem or being demonic.
But, in Ephesians 6:12-13, the Bible acknowledges the existence of spiritual beings and encounters with demons.
“For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.”
Ephesians 6:12-13 (NIV)
Though this condition has affected millions of people and caused physical and emotional challenges, the Bible only gives insights into the emotional and spiritual aspects of this condition.
There are various biblical stories that have been used to provide comfort and send us a message of hope for those with sleep paralysis.
A good reference is the story of the paralytic man, in Matthew 9:1-8 who was brought to Jesus for healing.
Now, Jesus forgave the paralyzed man for his sins, and commanded him to stand and walk. This healing shows Jesus’ authority over physical disabilities.
So, such stories remind us of God’s love and compassion. No matter the challenge we face, He’s always ready to support us, even with our physical challenges.
Sleep Paralysis Or Demonic Attack?
The interpretation you use for sleep paralysis actually depends on what your tradition says. I have already mentioned that there is no biblical verse associating sleep paralysis with demons.
However, demons can attack while you sleep, just like when you are awake.
That’s why the biblical stories associated with it are a motivation.
Now, scientifically, sleep paralysis is a medical condition that can be resolved through various methods. There is no scientific research associating this with demonic attacks.
Even so, our cultures and traditions say something different about it.
- In some African traditions, specifically Nigerian and Kenya, sleep paralysis is associated with being under demonic attack.
It’s believed this is the time demons take souls, and that is why some become paralyzed while sleeping.
- In Japanese traditions, it’s believed that this is the time when vengeful spirits come and suffocate their enemies while they are sleeping.
This actually depends on what you believe. But biblically, it is not associated with demons. Even so, God is stronger than all evil, so you have nothing to fear; just seek his wisdom.
But, I believe you’ll also enjoy learning about the spiritual meaning of hearing your name called while asleep.
Could This Be A Spiritual Attack While Sleeping?
Yes, what you could be experiencing is a spiritual attack while sleeping. At one point in life, you may experience spiritual paralysis.
This is the time when your spirit has grown weak, your heart feels heavy, and you struggle to move ahead.
During this moment, you may feel disconnected from God, and you just don’t know how to regain your spiritual strength.
However, there are biblical verses where God encourages, guides, and gives us hope to overcome this challenge.
Through these verses (I have listed them on the next subtopic), you will get strength and wisdom to help you overcome spiritual paralysis.
